  17. <p>Despite the crackdown on Palestinian leaders, Israel's violence
  18. escalates
  19. </p>
  20. <p>     When Israel deported 415 alleged Islamic agitators last
  21. December, the idea was to curb attacks by fundamentalist
  22. Palestinians on Jewish soldiers and civilians. It hasn't worked,
  23. as evidenced by the casualties so far this month: 10 Israelis
  24. killed and 14 wounded. Clashes between protesters and security
  25. forces have also left nine Palestinians dead and some 400
  26. injured. The expulsion of Hamas' political leadership has only
  27. freed its young gunmen to act more violently. "Now we need not
  28. have long discussions about the consequences of acting," says
  29. a field leader. "We just go ahead."

  31. <p>     Adding to the sense of crisis was a mysterious shooting in
  32. the Gaza Strip that may have been an assassination attempt on
  33. Dr. Haidar Abdel-Shafi, the chief Palestinian negotiator in the
  34. Middle East peace talks. As a large group of Gazans left a
  35. private home, shots killed a Palestinian teacher standing six
  36. feet from Abdel-Shafi. He blamed panicky Israeli soldiers, but
  37. the military denied responsibility, and activists from the Red
  38. Eagles, a Palestinian group that opposes the peace talks,
  39. claimed credit.
